Tearful occasion

Uruguay captain Juan Manuel Gaminara tried in vain to hold back the tears after Uruguay stunned Fiji 30-27 on an emotion-fuelled occasion in Kamaishi.

While this was only Los Teros’ third-ever win in the tournament’s history, the thrilling Pool D contest had a much deeper significance because it was played in one of the towns hit hardest by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that devastated eastern Japan.

A capacity crowd of 14,025 filled the Kamaishi Recovery Memorial Stadium, which had been purpose-built for RWC 2019 and constructed on the site of a school destroyed by the tsunami.

Hosting the match there was seen as symbolic, a powerful sign of the region’s ability to bounce back from the most unimaginable adversity.

And for Uruguay, it was an opportunity to show their improved form leading into RWC 2019 stood up to scrutiny at the highest level.

Berchesi the boot

Uruguay led 24-12 at half-time thanks to converted tries from scrum-half Santiago Arata, number eight Manuel Diana and centre Juan Manuel Cat as well as a penalty from Felipe Berchesi.

Berchesi then added two second-half penalties to finish with 15 points – setting a new national team record for the most points scored in a Rugby World Cup match.

Sadly for Fiji, their attempts to avoid becoming victims of one of the biggest shocks in the tournament’s history floundered with every dropped pass and unforced error.

“I’m really proud of my country, we’re not the biggest, we’re not the tallest but we came here to win,” said an emotional Gaminara, draped in the flag of his country.

“We’ve been preparing for four years for this, I’m really proud of my country. We never had anything granted, we always have to qualify. You saw the passion. I’m really proud.”

It was some turnaround from Uruguay as they’d been beaten 68-7 by Fiji the year before. But in Kamaishi, miracles happen.
