TOKYO, 26 Sep - It had everything - emotion, symbolism, great poignance and an outstanding match to boot - and World Rugby Chairman Sir Bill Beaumont believes the important decision to make Kamaishi a Rugby World Cup host is one of the best the organisation has made.
Fiji and Uruguay put on a show in front of more than 14,000 excited fans as Los Teros recorded their first Rugby World Cup victory in 16 years - a result which elevated them to 17th in the World Rugby rankings.
Beaumont said: “The decision to select Kamaishi as a host was important for the people of Kamaishi and there was no way we were not going there. It was very moving to watch the match.
“Rugby is such an important part of the community, was prominent in the rescue effort, and Rugby World Cup hosting is a symbol of hope, resilience, recovery and pride - a true reflection of rugby’s values.
“We are proud to have played a little part in the recovery of this remarkable community and would like to extend a massive heartfelt thank-you to the people of Kamaishi for embracing Rugby World Cup so warmly.”
