Uruguay have become the latest nation to qualify for the IRB
Junior World Rugby Trophy 2011 after beating traditional rivals
Chile 66-18 in the decisive match of the South American Under 19
Championship on Sunday.
Los Teritos' convincing victory at the Santiago Lawn
Tennis Club means they qualify for the Under 20 tournament as South
America's representatives to join Samoa, the side relegated
from Junior World Championship 2010, Asian champions Japan and
Zimbabwe, the African champions.
The remaining four places at the IRB Junior World Rugby
Trophy 2011 will be filled by the host nation and representatives
from North America and Europe, the latter holding their own
regional championship from 24 to 30 October in Belgium.
Uruguay, the inaugural Trophy champions in 2008, finished
fifth in this year's tournament and will be looking to better
that performance to give them another chance to play at the
pinnacle of the IRB's Age Grade structure, the Junior World
Championship.
Coached by Fernando Silva, Uruguay were simply too strong and
clinical for their Chilean counterparts, scoring 10 tries in the
emphatic victory with wing Federico Favaro scoring a hat-trick and
flanker Agustin Alonso touching down a brace.
Agustin Ormaechea, the son of former Uruguay captain and
coach Diego Ormaechea, was again a key player for Los Teritos, the
centre and captain converting eight of the 10 tries to take his
tally for the tournament to 30 points.
On the opening day of the tournament, Uruguay had run in six
tries to beat Paraguay 44-12 with Alonso again among the try
scorers, while Chile proved too strong for Brazil with a 47-0
victory to set up the decisive match with Los Teritos.
Uruguay and Chile will now face Argentina, who will play in
the IRB Junior World Championship in Italy next year, in one off
matches on Wednesday and Saturday respectively in Santiago del
Estero.
