With one week left for the Spirit of Rugby Award in association with Dove Men+Care nominations, World Rugby is calling on the rugby family to nominate individuals or an individual moment that demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship and care, on or off the field.
The shortlist of award nominees will be invited to attend the World Rugby Awards 2018 in Monaco on 25 November, where the winner will be announced.
The Awards will bring together the world’s top players, World Rugby Hall of Fame inductees, representatives from member unions, and the global rugby family to honour the best of rugby in 2018. The Spirit of Rugby Award celebrates individuals who have displayed the core values that lie at the heart of rugby – integrity, respect, solidarity, passion and discipline.
World Rugby Awards partner, Dove Men+Care, recently launched an emotive series of videos titled the ‘Spirit of Rugby’ to inspire the rugby community to submit an award nomination for a person or team who have gone above and beyond with an outstanding act of care.
The latest film highlights the spirit and togetherness in rugby when Australian international and former Kamaishi Seawaves player Scott Fardy put others before himself by opting to stay and help those affected by the tsunami that destroyed the Japanese city.
“It was a life-changing kind of moment,” Fardy said. “I never suffered in any shape or form, but I saw a lot of suffering from the people of my area and the town I was living in. There was only ever one thought and that was to help these amazing people get back on their feet. It’s fantastic to see the new stadium and I’m looking forward to visiting soon.”
The Kamaishi Recovery Memorial Stadium will host two matches in next year’s World Cup, which will be played at 12 venues around Japan. Built on the former site of the local Elementary and Junior High Schools, construction of the stadium began in April 2017. The Kamaishi Recovery Memorial Stadium is the only newly-built facility of the 12 Rugby World Cup venues.
