Australia ended day one of the Amsterdam Sevens as top seeds with New Zealand and England the other sides to enjoy unbeaten records at the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series finale. 

Only two points separate defending champions New Zealand and Australia in the standings in the race to be crowned the 2013/14 Series winners.

Australia will face Brazil in the Cup quarter-finals with world champions New Zealand in the opposite half of the draw against Russia.

The other Cup quarter-finals are regional tussles with Pool C winners England meeting France and Canada tackling USA, who bounced back well after an opening 43-7 loss to New Zealand.

Tim Walsh’s Australian side kicked off proceedings under the Amsterdam sun with a 24-5 defeat of France and followed that up with wins over South Africa (29-7) and Russia (36-5), IRB Women’s Sevens Player of the Year nominee Emilee Cherry at the heart of her side’s success.


New Zealand, defending Amsterdam and Series champions, conceded the first try against USA but then ran riot with Carla Hohepa and IRB Women’s Sevens Player of the Year nominee Kayla McAlister both scoring two tries.

Ireland were then beaten 28-7 before Spain gave the world champions an almighty scare at 5-5 midway through the second half until Shiray Tane and McAlister made certain of the victory.

England and Canada both overcame the Netherlands and Brazil to set up the decider that didn’t disappointment and went right down to the wire, the Canadians being forced into touch with time up on the clock to go down 10-5.

Meanwhile, the hosts missed out on a place in the Cup quarter-finals after losing their final Pool C match 5-0 to Brazil and must now regroup to face Ireland in the second Bowl semi-final. The other semi-final will see Spain face South Africa.
