We bring you some interesting statistics from day three of the IRB Junior World Championship 2011 in Italy as the pool stages reached a dramatic and exciting climax.

  • New Zealand, France and England end the pool stages with the only unbeaten records and are joined in the semi finals by Australia, the best runner up across the three pools, albeit only on point differential from South Africa.

  • It is the first time that France have qualified for the JWC semi finals.

  • France have scored the fewest points of the semi finalists with 82 and 11 tries. This compares with New Zealand (204 points, 30 tries), Australia (129 points, 19 tries) and England (98 tries, 12 tries).

  • The top seeds for the semi finals, New Zealand have by far the best average per match in terms of points and tries at JWC 2011, with 68 points and 10 tries. Compare this with Italy’s 5.33 points and 0.33 tries, the lowest averages among the 12 teams.

  • South Africa, Wales, Fiji and Ireland will battle for the fifth to eighth places, while the threat of relegation to the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy in 2012 looms over Argentina, Scotland, Tonga and Italy.

  • Ireland wing Andrew Conway and England flyer Christian Wade both scored tries on day three to draw level with Charles Piutau of New Zealand and South Africa’s Francois Venter at the top of the try-scoring charts at JWC 2011.

  • Conway’s try in the 30-13 victory over Scotland has brought him to within one try of Zac Guildford, the all-time Junior World Championship leading try scorer on 10. Guildford, a JWC winner in 2008 and 2009, shares the record of eight in a single tournament with fellow Baby Black Julian Savea.

  • New Zealand and England remain the only sides not to suffer defeat in the pool stages, having each won 12 from 12. Australia and South Africa’s losses on Saturday mean they have each now lost two matches in the pool stages.

  • Eighty-three players have crossed the try-line at JWC 2011, but England wing Christian Wade and New Zealand flanker Sam Cane remain the only ones to score a hat-trick.

  • A total of 324 points were scored on day three, swelling the figure for JWC 2011 to 988.

  • New Zealand are the leading try scorers at JWC 2011 with 30, only three fewer than they have managed in each of the previous three tournaments. Australia (19) were joined by England (12), France (11), South Africa (10) and Wales (12) as the other teams into double figures after match day three.

  • Not one of France’s tries at JWC 2011 had been scored by a back going into their Pool B decider with Australia, a statistic addressed with all four tries on Saturday being scored by the backline.

  • Gareth Anscombe remains the leading point scorer at JWC 2011 despite playing little more than 10 minutes in New Zealand’s win over Argentina, kicking a conversion to increase his tally to 46. This is now only one more than South Africa fly half Johan Goosen, with Wales No. 10 Matthew Morgan (35) and Fijian Josateki Lalagavesi (32) the next best.

  • New Zealand have now scored 204 points in this year’s tournament, taking their tally to 923 across their 18 matches in Junior World Championship history.

  • While New Zealand could break the 1,000 point barrier in JWC history before the end of the 2011 edition, Tonga have scored the fewest points (281) of the sides to play 18 matches, although Fiji (308), Scotland (310) and Argentina (319) are not far ahead of them.

  • Michele Campagnaro, the second youngest player at JWC 2011, kicked only the third drop goal of the tournament in Italy’s 56-6 loss to Wales in Treviso. Scotland captain Duncan Weir and South Africa fly half Johan Goosen are the others to successfully kick a drop goal.

  • Only 17 drop goals have been kicked in Junior World Championship history.

  • Australia are the only other side into double figures at JWC 2011 with 129 points in Pool B, closely followed by England, their fellow semi finalists, on 98, South Africa (95) and Wales (90).

  • Hosts Italy have scored the fewest points (16) and tries (1) at JWC 2011. They have also conceded the most tries (20) of all 12 teams, followed by Tonga (16) and Wales (15), all bar one of the latter’s coming in a 92-0 rout by New Zealand in round two.

  • Ireland have kicked the most penalties at JWC 2011 with 13, while Australia, Italy, New Zealand and Tonga have slotted only two between the uprights.

  • For the first time at JWC 2011, a team other than New Zealand were the top point and try scorers on a match day, the honour falling to Wales with 56 points and eight tries in their emphatic defeat of Italy in Treviso.

  • Gareth Anscombe is the only player into double figures with conversions, kicking 19 across the Baby Blacks’ Pool A campaign. His Welsh counterpart Matthew Morgan is next best on nine, one more than Jean Pascal Barraque, a star in France’s win over Australia.

  • The Baby Blacks scored seven tries in their 48-15 win over Argentina, but needed one more to reach 100 in the JWC pool stages. They did do enough, however, to better the previous record of 28 tries in the pool stages, set by South Africa in 2008.

  • Argentina had conceded 19 tries against New Zealand before finally crossing the whitewash themselves through hooker Lucas Sartori. Having waited so long to breach the Baby Blacks’ line, they then did it again in the first half, through second row Juan Cruz Guillemaín.

  • The average number of points per match at JWC 2011 has slipped slightly after day three and now stands at 54.89, with an average of 29.22 being scored in the first half and 25.67 after the break.

  • South Africa’s Johan Goosen has kicked the most penalties at JWC 2011 with 10, although this is still some way behind the all-time mark of 28 by Welsh fly half Matthew Jarvis.

  • A total of 38 tries were scored on day three – the fewest so far on a match day at JWC 2011 – to take the total for the tournament to 122, of which 90 have been turned into seven pointers.

  • The average for a JWC 2011 match is 54.89 points, 6.78 tries, five conversions, 3.5 penalties, 0.17 drop goals and 0.67 yellow cards.

  • No red cards have been handed out at JWC 2011 to date.
