Intensity, attention to detail and ball retention were the themes of Romania's training in the build up to their final Pool A game against host nation Chile at the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy on Wednesday.

Aware of the great attacking potential of the Chilean backs, the Romanian three-quarters, with captain Ionel Cazan back in the team, practised their rush defence patterns at nauseam, under the control of assistant coach Virgil Nastase, a former Romanian international fly half.

On the other side of the field, the pack fine-tuned their lineout options, with the giant back five of Cristian Munteanu, Alex Valcu, - who captained the team in the previous match - Valentin Ivan, Alexandru Mitu and Alexandru Beldean sharing the duties.

Then from lineout, a short and sharp scrummaging session gave the front row of Petre Zapan, Eduard Marinca and Vlad Badalicescu, a chance to lock horns with their equally eager understudies Nichita Iacob, Florin Enache and Constantin Dumitru.

The emphasis on the set piece of the Romanians suggest a bruising battle up front, in an attempt to deny the dynamic Chilean backs a fair share of possession at the Stade Francais Club.

The new Romanian director of coaching, Ellis Meachen of New Zealand, who arrived in Santiago to see the young pretenders in action, was genuinely pleased with the quality of their effort and congratulated the team and the coaches after training.
