Reaction from the locker room after the 12 matches on day one in Hong Kong.

David Campese, Australia Assistant Coach

“It is always good to get off to a winning start. We perhaps put a little pressure on ourselves again and I think that the guys realise you cannot expect to win when you are 12 points up as that is only two tries and you are back on even terms again.

“It is a good experience for what is a young team. It is always hard to get up and play one game, return to the hotel, but you have to start somewhere and we are happy with the win.”

Benjamin Ayimba, Kenya Head Coach

“It was a very good start and the boys did what we have been trying to do over the past couple of months, sorting out what we did not do very well in America, and scoring 47 points is proof that is the case.

“We are very ambitious with what we want to achieve here in Hong Kong and topping the pool is our first priority because it is a sure fire way of getting to the quarter finals. For today and tomorrow that is what we are really focusing on.

“Hong Kong will always be a special place for us as it is the venue where we first defeated a big team. It is always an occasion to relish and the boys want to really build on what we did here five years ago.”

John Brake, England

“We started off with a bit of a wobble, but I thought we composed ourselves well and finished the job off nicely. We had five new names on the team sheet, and perhaps we did not quite know what to expect but all the young guys have great enthusiasm and under the leadership of Andy Vilk and Ben Gollings we have two of the most experienced players in the world. I think it could come together nicely.

“You hear that Hong Kong is the second home for England, and it certainly is. The reception and support is incredible.

“We will now go home and relax, but come 7am tomorrow morning we will have our match heads on and we know that Sri Lanka will be no easy obstacle to pass and we will need to get over that one before key games and hopefully that will take us through to the Cup. We will think about day three when it comes.”

Tyshawn Henry, USA Women’s team (winners, Cup competition)

“I am ecstatic for myself and my teammates. It is the first time that any other team other than New Zealand has won the Cup, but it means so much to us along the road to Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai next year.

“It is an amazing experience being here in Hong Kong and to play in a packed stadium. Hopefully this will be the first of many opportunities to play in the world’s biggest rugby stadiums.

“Anything can happen on any given day and we are very much taking it one tournament at a time. However, with the San Diego and Hong Kong titles under our belt this year we can keep on building and possibly lift World Cup next year.”
