The RBS Six Nations trophy was not the only piece of silverware to be seen at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday as the new trophy for the IRB Junior World Championship was unveiled at the Wales versus France match.

IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset, accompanied by IRB Council Member for Wales David Pickering, unveiled the trophy during the half-time interval in the Six Nations decider, which Wales won 29-12 to secure the Grand Slam.

The trophy has been designed and crafted especially for the tournament, which will bring together the world’s top 16 teams at Under 20 level with matches taking place across Wales in June with Cardiff, Newport, Swansea and Wrexham all hosting pools.

"When considering the trophy for the IRB Junior World Championship we wanted something that carried forward the unique stature of previous IRB Age Grade tournament trophies and that reflected the Championship's global stature," said Lapasset.

"The finished article is striking in that it totally encapsulates the true spirit of Rugby, depicting teamwork in the form of a lineout and framed within a globe. It is a striking and totally unique trophy and one which will become the symbol of this exciting new international Age Grade tournament."

Trophy craftsman Nick Winton added: "The IRB Junior World Championship trophy is a unique item designed by Colin Hellier and manufactured and engraved by renowned individual craftsmen from all over the home counties and in London.

"The production process comprised several stages: design, modelling, casting, spinning, smithing, wood turning, polishing and engraving. Each is a highly specialist craft carried out by several different craftsmen which makes the production of the IRB Junior World Championship trophy a team effort."
