Santa Fé have won the CONSUR Cross Border tournament following their 34-12 defeat of fellow Argentine province Entre Rios at the Club Estudiantes de Paraná on Saturday.

They had gone into the final round of matches in the IRB-assisted tournament on top of the table after beating Argentine province Rosario 34-10 and then the Uruguay national side 15-12.

Uruguay had started the tournament with a 32-7 defeat of Entre Rios, but that defeat by Santa Fé and then the 14-10 loss to Rosario on Saturday meant that they finished third of the four teams.

Santiago Carracedo’s try and conversion by Nicolas Morales had actually given Uruguay a 21st minute lead, but Rosario replied with scores from Juan Baetti and Santiago González to lead 14-10 at half time in the hot conditions.

Uruguay did cut the deficit with a Morales penalty, but the victory – allied with their 66-0 defeat of Entre Rios the previous weekend – meant that Rosario finished second in the standings.
