Favourites Brazil and rivals Colombia both won opening victories in the South American 'B' Division Championship at the weekend.

The round-robin event featuring Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Peru is being held at the Newton College grounds in La Molina, East Lima.

Playing in front of 1,000 spectators, Columbia overcame Venezuela 33-13 in the first tie of the event before Brazil proved too strong for the hosts, running out 24-15 winners.

On Wednesday the same four teams will play again, Brazil taking on Venezuela and the hosts playing Columbia.

The final round-robin matches will take place on Saturday 10 November, Brazil and Columbia in the likely final and Peru playing Venezuela.

South America's 'A' division, traditionally involving Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay, is a separate CONSUR event, to be played separately.
