Rugby World Cup 2015 sensation Juan Imhoff has joined up with Argentina ahead of the HSBC London Sevens with a view to securing a place in the squad for Rio 2016.
The 28-year-old, who scored five tries at Rugby World Cup 2015, has played twice before for Argentina in the 2009 World Games and at a South American tournament in Mar del Plata in 2010. Imhoff currently plys his trade forRacing 92 in the Top 14 and featured in their European Champions Cup final loss to Saracens last weekend.
Argentina sevens coach Santiago Gomez Cora has been keen to involve Imhoff in the Argentina set-up ahead of the Olympic Games in August and is excited to have him with the team ahead of the series climax in London.
“Juan’s willingness to join us saw him deal with his club over the last few months; for different reasons he wasn’t able to come and play for us until now,” said Gómez Cora. “He wanted to play the European final and then join us, so he is fulfilling part of his dream and we are delighted.
“He is a wing and probably will play there, but we will work with him over the next few days and we’ll see where he best fits the team. Players that can play in more than one specific position are always welcomed in sevens.”
