Australia remain on track to claim this year’s women's sevens series, as they went unbeaten after day one at the Canada Sevens in Langford, British Columbia.

The girls in gold topped Pool A after beating France, Brazil and Russia, with try-scoring sensation Emilee Cherry claiming three touchdowns in the last match.

Pool B was topped by reigning champions New Zealand who eased past Fiji, USA and Spain. Hosts Canada finished top of Pool C after beating Japan, Ireland and England. The hosts also managed not to concede a single point over the three games, which will give them extra confidence going into day two.

Australia will now play Spain in the opening quarter-final on day two in Langford, with New Zealand facing Russia in the next decider. Canada will play France in the third quarter final of the day, with USA taking on England afterwards.

RE:LIVE: Niall Williams flick pass
A well timed flick pass from New Zealand's Niall Williams sets up a try against Fiji at the #Canada7s!

The weather and the crowds both played their part in another fantastic tournament, where the usual mix of thrills, spills and top action was on display.

POOL PLAY

Australia may have chosen to rest some of their more experienced players but on day one in Langford they continued to turn heads in Pool A.

Tim Walsh’s side had a slightly nervy opening victory, 12-7 against France, but they soon found their stride and impressed. Debutant Shenae Ciesiolka’s scored her first series try with just her second touch of the ball, and Emilee Cherry’s hat-trick against Russia steered them confidently into day two.

Behind them, Russia and France duelled for second spot with a late Caroline Ladagnous try separating the two when they met - and that was enough to push them through in second place.

RE:LIVE: Patricia Garcia try versus USA
Spain's Patricia Garcia scores a freak try to shock USA at the #Canada7s
New Zealand controlled Pool B with Portia Woodman back and making the art of try-scoring look effortless.

The Kiwis delivered comfortable victories over Fiji and Spain before working hard to beat the USA. Niall Williams’ offloading game was sublime, proving that natural skill runs in the family, and also showing that her side is eager to do one better following their second place finish in Atlanta last weekend.

After a mistake in the final play of the match, the USA suffered a shock loss to Spain, but bounced back well. Carmen Farmer had a stand out day on her debut and will want to take more of the opportunities on day two.

Pool C was a closely fought affair between the hosts Canada and England. Canada started with emphatic victories over Japan and Ireland before meeting the English. In their first game, England easily breezed passed Ireland but on their second outing were pushed all the way by Japan, who scored 17 unanswered second-half points. The pool decider was a seismic clash, with the hosts just edging the game thanks to Bianca Farella’s try.

The result means that Canada sealed top spot and will be motivated to go all the way in their home tournament.
