All Blacks Sevens forward Sam Dickson was named HSBC Player of the Final after his performance helped New Zealand to a third Cup win of the season.

One try and plenty of defence ensured Dickson was on the winning side at the inaugural HSBC Canada Sevens at BC Place in Vancouver.

"It was a tough tournament, they were six really hard games and I think every game came down to the last whistle," said Dickson after collecting his award.

"The boys showed a lot of heart, it was awesome and we're stoked. It was a huge team effort, I just did my bit and we came out on top."

Dickson scored a crucial try in the Cup final, with New Zealand trailing 7-0 after Rosko Specman scored the opener. But Dickson clawed New Zealand back into the match having been set up by Liam Messam before setting up Kurt Baker with a sensational take after a Gillies Kaka restart to give them a 14-7 lead at half-time.

The New Zealand forward was also impressive in defence, and made a total of 23 tackles across the weekend. Those 23 were the joint highest of all the players at BC Place alongside team-mate Tim Mikkelson.

Dickson did not make the dream team in Canada, but Mikkelson did and the third Cup win of the season sees New Zealand move within two points of series leaders Fiji.
