Everyone at World Rugby was saddened to hear of the passing of former committee member and IRFU Chief Executive Philip Browne in recent days.
Browne was Chief Executive of the IRFU for 23 years, taking over in 1998 and leading the union through to 2021. His tenure saw the development of the Aviva Stadium, now one of the great stages in world rugby as well as huge growth at all levels of the game in Ireland.
Browne was a long standing member of World Rugby’s governance structures and was a driving force behind moves for a global rugby calendar. Philip’s efforts and collegiate approach laid the groundwork that led to the Nations Championship and World Rugby Nations Cup tournaments, driving opportunity for unions around the world.
Remembering Philip, World Rugby Chief Executive Alan Gilpin said “Integrity and clarity were the hallmarks of the way Philip went about his work. He led the IRFU and the wider global game through periods of huge change. He leaves a legacy not just in Irish rugby but around the world that I hope his family and friends are very proud of. Philip will be much missed by all who knew him.
“The thoughts of everyone at World Rugby go out to Philip’s family, friends and former colleagues in Irish Rugby at this difficult time.”
