Playing in their first international since defeating Russia in the RWC 2015 qualifying play-off back in October, Los Teros ran in 11 tries – the first coming inside the opening 60 seconds – against a Paraguay side they will face again at the forthcoming CONSUR Cup, which features the top two sides from the 2014 version of the South American Senior A Championship in addition to reigning champions Argentina Jaguars.

Uruguay winger Jerónimo Etcheverry (pictured) marked his return to frontline goal-kicking duties with a flawless display from the tee, converting both of his tries and nine others for a 32-point haul. Paraguay’s only points came from a 68th-minute penalty from the boot of fly-half Gerard Cuttier.

While the emphatic victory in Montevideo will have no doubt put a smile on the face of head coach Pablo Lemoine, it had no bearing on the World Rugby Rankings due to 20th-place Uruguay being ranked 18 places higher than their opponents. The top two from this year's tournament will be entered into CONSUR Cup 2016.

Czech treble

Brazil, Uruguay’s next opponents in Montevideo on Saturday, fell one place in the rankings to 36th as a result of the Czech Republic’s 12-9 victory over Croatia in European Nations Cup Division 2A. The Czech Republic have won their opening three games to top the ENC Division 2A table.

A try at the start of each half from scrum-half Vakhtang Pailodze and replacement Jiri Frank earned them their latest victory inZagreband a gain of 0.82 of a ranking point – enough to lift them above Brazil and Poland and into 34th place in the rankings.

Rugby Europe’s newest member Union, Montenegro, defeated Estonia 27-25 in ENC Division 3 to set up a promotion decider against Slovakia on Tuesday. The winner of that game will move up to ENC Division 2D.

In what was a see-saw game throughout, replacement Marko Novakovic levelled the scores when he crossed the Estonian line with six minutes to go, and Srdjan Popovic tagged on the extras to hand Montenegro a win in their first 15s international.

Slovakia earned the right to have a shot at promotion after making short work of a Montenegro President’s XV. Incredibly, 13 different players got their names on the scoresheet for Slovakia – one short of the all-time record for an international team currently held by Fiji, who had 14 different try-scorers when they racked up a 113-13 win against the Solomon Isles in August 1969.

Neither match affected the rankings as not all of the nations involved are full Member Unions.
