The World Rugby Nations Cup 2019 was won on home soil by Uruguay for a third consecutive year, but Los Teros did not have it all their own way in a hugely competitive tournament where any of the four teams were capable of beating each other on their day.

We take a look back at some of the tournament's defining moments.

WORLD RUGBY NATIONS CUP 2019

WHEN: 4-15 June, 2019
WHERE: Montevideo, Uruguay
FINAL STANDINGS: 1. Uruguay 2. Russia 3. Argentina XV 4. Namibia
LEADING POINTS-SCORER: Federico Favaro (Uruguay), 34
LEADING TRY-SCORER: Facundo Cordero (Argentina XV), five

LOS TEROS HAT-TRICK: Uruguay followed up their wins in 2017 and 2018 with another title on home soil, at the redeveloped Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo. Los Teros had the best attack and best defence in terms of points and tries scored/conceded and were deserved champions but, unlike the previous two editions, a clean sweep of wins proved beyond them with Namibia coming out on top 30-28 thanks to a last-gasp penalty from Cliven Loubser when the teams met in round two.

DOING IT THE HARD WAY: Uruguay took their third consecutive title despite playing with a man down for half an hour of their 28-15 win over Argentina XV. Germán Kessler was the first into the sin-bin on 33 minutes, Ignacio Dotti was next and no sooner had he returned to the field, Leandro Segredo was given a 10-minute breather.

BEAR-ING FRUIT: Russia enjoyed a good campaign as they continued their preparations for Rugby World Cup 2019, finishing runners-up for the second time. The Bears recovered well from a 48-26 defeat to Uruguay with a thrilling 48-40 victory against Argentina XV. Both sides scored six tries apiece in a game that was only settled by Sergei Ianiushkin’s 78th-minute penalty despite Russia having been 31 points up at the start of the second half. A 20-0 win over Namibia in the final round guaranteed them second place.
