The 2009/10 IRB Sevens World Series kicks off this coming weekend with the Dubai event at 'The Sevens' the UAE's new purpose-built sports facility.
The Fijians, winners in both Hong Kong and Edinburgh last year on the IRB Sevens World Series and the closest challengers to South Africa, turned in a dazzling display in Sri Lanka to win the international competition final 38-12.
They will arrive in Dubai full of confidence and with several stars of the past back in contention, notably William Ryder.
The South Africans, with only Renfred Dazel in action in Sri Lanka from their pool of centrally-contracted players, went into the lead with a try by Brian Shabangu but Fiji replied through Niumania Rokobu and then scored two more tries through Ryder and Osea Kolinisau.
The Fijians maintained their supremacy in the second half, scoring three more tries through Kolinisau (2) and Rokobu, Ryder adding the extras.
Japan claim Sri Lanka Asia title
Propelled by four scintillating tries by skipper Koji Wada, Japan clinched the Asian title by beating Malaysia 26-7.
The Malaysians opened scoring and led 7-5 at the break, but the Japanese dominated after the break and scored three more tries by the captain.
Earlier they had won 40-5 in the semis against Chinese Taipei, while Malaysia brushed aside Kazakhstan 19-0.
Hosts Sri Lanka shocked South Korea 22-12 on day one to underline their progress, but Thailand ran out winners in the Plate, 15-12 winners over South Korea.
