The following players have attended disciplinary hearings during the World Rugby U20 Trophy in Zimbabwe.

Eroni Mawi (Fiji) – one-match suspension

Fiji prop Eroni Mawi was cited for an act of foul play contrary to Law 10.4(a) (striking) in the match against Uruguay on 19 April, 2016. The player appeared at a hearing in Harare before Judicial Officer Bongai Zamchiya (Zimbabwe) on 21 April.

The player denied the act of foul play. The Judicial Officer heard evidence from Uruguayan player Juan Diego Quintero, Uruguay’s doctor Dr Marcelo Santurio and reviewed the video footage in addition to hearing from Mawi and his team management. The Judicial Officer determined that the player had committed an act of foul play in recklessly striking the face of Quintero with his forearm in a maul momentarily after Quintero had released the ball. The Judicial Officer determined this was low-end offending which carries an entry point of two weeks. The Judicial Officer reduced this by the maximum 50 per cent reduction for mitigation to one week based on factors including the player’s good record. He did not find that one week was wholly disproportionate to the offending and accordingly Mawi is suspended for Fiji’s match against Samoa on 23 April at the World Rugby U20 Trophy. He is free to play in Fiji’s third match against Zimbabwe.

The player has 48 hours to appeal from receipt of the full written decision.

The written decision is available here.

Ratu Alifereti Rabukawaqa (Fiji) – four-match suspension

Fiji prop Ratu Alifereti Rabukawaqa was cited for an act of foul play contrary to Law 10.4(j) (dangerous lifting tackle) in the match against Uruguay on 19 April, 2016. The player appeared at a hearing in Harare before Judicial Officer Bongai Zamchiya (Zimbabwe) on 21 April.

The player accepted that he had committed the act of foul play. The Judicial Officer determined that the foul play was low-end offending which carries an entry point of four weeks. The Judicial Officer considered that there is an ongoing pattern of dangerous lifting tackles which need to be deterred in the game which players have been warned about. He applied an additional two weeks to the entry point by way of aggravation. He then considered the player’s mitigating factors, including his good record, and reduced the sanction by two weeks (the maximum of 50 per cent of the four-week entry point) leaving a final sanction of four weeks.

The player is suspended for Fiji’s remaining three matches at the World Rugby U20 Trophy and his first club match on return to Fiji.

The player has 48 hours to appeal.

The written decision is available here.
