Regarded by many as one of Scotland’s greatest rugby players, Andy Irvine earned 51 caps for his country, 15 as captain, between 1972 and 1982 and appeared in nine tests for the British and Irish Lions. At the time of his retirement, he was Scotland’s most capped player.

Irvine was one of the finest attacking full-backs of his generation, a player blessed with searing pace and a keen eye for a gap. He was also a goal-kicking machine, scoring 274 points in all matches for the Lions – 28 of them in tests – including a record 156 points on the 1974 tour to South Africa, and 273 for his country.

Added to his three tours as player, Irvine fulfilled the role of chairman and tour manager for the Lions. He has also been president of the Scottish Rugby Union and chairman of Celtic Rugby.
