World Rugby’s website has become www.world.rugby and all of the international federation’s digital properties, including email addresses, have been seamlessly transitioned as part of a phased major digital re-brand.
With competition for a share of the youth audience in the digital space, .rugby is a major digital pillar of World Rugby’s fan-engagement strategy, supporting the visibility, accessibility and engagement of a sport that has 9.1 million players and 338 million fans worldwide.

The process to secure the .rugby domain began in 2011, when the IRB (now World Rugby) partnered with ROAR Domains, a US based tech/sports marketing company, to submit its application.
Aware that the Internet has become increasingly cluttered and that domain extensions such as .com, .net and .org are reaching saturation point, World Rugby and Roar moved quickly when the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced its portfolio expansion of generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs).
Following a long and extensive process that saw competing applicants, with no affiliation to rugby fended off, World Rugby and Roar were informed of the successful outcome of their application.
